The Giggle Cure... Is There Proof That Laughter is the Best Medicine?

My neighbor Annie and I went for a ski today, Ruby Dell followed along and brought up the rear... I can't help but think that exercise plus the giggling of three girls (um grown women) on the trail brought back the feeling of being on the playground!

Could it be that the endorphins from skiing plus laughter create a synergistic effect?

"The old saying that 'laughter is the best medicine,' definitely appears to be true when it comes to protecting your heart," says Michael Miller, M.D., F.A.C.C., director of the Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Miller's studies have concluded that not only does laughter benefit the body by releasing stress, it also increases oxygen and blood flow, actually strengthening the heart as well.

"The ability to laugh -- either naturally or as learned behavior may have important implications in societies such as the U.S. where heart disease remains the number one killer," says Dr. Miller. "We know that exercising, not smoking and eating foods low in saturated fat will reduce the risk of heart disease. Perhaps regular, hearty laughter should be added to the list." Dr. Miller says it may be possible to incorporate laugher into our daily activities, just as we do with other heart-healthy activities, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. http://www.umm.edu/news/releases/laughter.htm

Accident, snow yoga is energizing my winter! For those who don't know, I am an avid xc skier and have mixed in a little yoga pose/pilates action while on the trail. What a powerhouse builder! I'm thinking of calling it snōga. Crazy? Maybe, but do what works and man my abs are killing me! More from the mountain later...

Snowmobile EXPO: Lean, Mean, & Green

The 19th annual World Snowmobile EXPO brought yet another season of incredible machines to West Yellowstone, MT this past weekend. The unheard story behind this new breed of sled is how the snowmobile industry is keeping up with changing and constricting EPA emissions standards. The word on the street, or in the exhibition tent as the case may be, is that Polaris is the front runner in this changing technology and apparently the competitor to beat.

Polaris's answer to the consumer demand for "bigger, better, faster" is in their slogan for the 2010 Rush, "Stiffer. Stronger. Sharper." In an interview with District Sales Manager, Brad Hacking (pictured), I learned about the engineering feats their team has performed in order to make what was fast even faster and what was clean even cleaner. "The EPA changed their standards by 60% in 2007, and they have another round equaling 30% of that coming in 2011. We are ready for it." The new chassis features structural bonding instead of the traditional welding method which removes metal, weight and extra parts to break. This results in a cleaner, lighter weight sled that leaves the traditionally welded machines in the dust. Just one look at the progressive rate rear suspension and you know you're about to experience something cutting edge.

But the two-stroke "Cleanfire Injection" is where these machines really begin to shine. By changing the process by which the air and fuel combine, these engines are able to burn clean without losing horsepower like their heavier four-stroke competitors. "The 2010 Dragon 163 has the weight to horsepower equivalent of 1&1/2 Corvettes." Whoa. Polaris hasn't compromised anything, on the contrary they have treated the EPA standard changes as an opportunity to show what their engineering team can really do.

So, are any of the 2010 models true green machines? Probably not, but this year EXPO took a big step towards making the words "environmentally friendly" sexy and fast.

The Sportsman's Girl Story

The Sportsman's Girl idea came about one afternoon while I was shopping at an Army/Navy store with my fiance, Brad, an avid hunter. I saw this really great brown wooly thermal outfit that I couldn't wait to try on and slipped it over my clothes while I was between the aisles. I popped out to show the boys my great find, only to figure out that because of the manly cut of the thermals I could barely walk and very closely resembled Elmer Fudd. I was determined to get something cut for a woman that performed as well as the men's gear.

So there in St. Anthony, Idaho was born the Sportsman's Girl. Dedicated to all those ladies who take pride in playing tough and looking pretty because...
